Yard Signs in Seattle FAQ

January 04, 2022

Yard signs are one of the most common ways businesses and organizations advertise their services or events. From school bake sales to local political campaigns, it’s challenging to go a day without seeing one.

There’s a good reason why these lawn signs are so popular. Here are just a few of the many benefits they offer:

  • High ROI
  • Easy to install
  • Tens of thousands of daily impressions
  • Long-lasting

Read on to learn more about yard signs in Seattle and how they can help get your message out there into the wild.

How to Install a Yard Sign

While yard signs may look like they’re easy to install (and they are), there’s a preferred method that will help prevent unintentional damage:

  1. Find an ideal location. Look for ground that isn’t too hard yet is soft enough to allow the stakes to penetrate the grass and dirt quickly. Avoid hard soil as it may require extra force to get the stakes into the ground, and that could potentially cause them to bend.
  2. Take the metal frame and gently push the stakes into the ground. Alternatively, you can use a soft mallet and tap each side until it reaches the desired depth.
  3. Take the yard sign and slide it over the stake. Don’t try to force it or apply an extreme amount of pressure. The sign should be snug enough to grab the metal frame but loose enough for you to get it into place.

If you’re planning on installing the sign on a pole or fence, refer to the installation instructions provided by the sign manufacturer. You might need additional mounting hardware, such as zip ties or nuts and bolts.

Seattle Yard Sign Rules and Regulations

The City of Seattle (and surrounding communities) has a list of yard sign regulations. While the rules are pretty straightforward, if you’re unsure of anything, give City Hall a call, and they’ll be able to explain things in greater detail.

But what about private property? Considering how the Seattle area is highly developed, you’re either on city or private property. One example is homeowner’s associations (HOA).

They control apartments and condos and make the bylaws that govern those areas. It’s best to get written permission before the heavy hand of the HOA comes crashing down onto your sign.

When it comes to installing yard signs in Seattle, it’s best to ask first.

How to Protect a Seattle Yard Sign?

Over the past decade or so, yard signs have become a target for vandals. Vaccinations, political campaigns, and other hot-button topics can cause people to damage or destroy the innocent yard sign that sits relatively unprotected in the wild.

While it’s technically illegal to destroy a sign, don’t expect much in the way of help finding whoever did it. With that being said, here are several ways that you can mitigate the chance for potential vandalism to your sign:

  • Install the yard sign in an area that’s well-lit at nighttime. Common sense.
  • Better yet, if there’s a nearby CCTV camera, try to keep the sign within view.
  • You can also apply anti-graffiti coatings to prevent vandalism with a permanent marker.

Regardless of how much effort you put into protecting your yard sign—unless it’s surrounded by a 10-foot wide and 10-foot-deep moat that’s filled with man-eating crocodiles—a determined vandal will most likely find a way to deface or destroy it.

Therefore, the best thing you can do is drive or walk by your sign every so often to check up on it.

Storing and Cleaning a Yard Sign

After the sign has served its purpose, it’s now time to remove it. If you plan on reusing it later, take care when removing the sign from the stakes and the frame from the ground. Try to avoid using too much pressure as you could damage them.

To clean your sign, simply take a damp rag and gently wipe away any grime or dirt that’s accumulated. Store your sign in an area free from moisture and humidity, and it will last you many years to come.
