New Year’s Resolutions For Your Business Sign

December 31, 2014

The New Year is upon us and it is a time for looking back to the past, and more importantly, forward to the coming year. It's a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make and resolve to follow through on those changes. If improving your business is one of your goals for the new year, keep reading to learn our tips for creating the best business signage.

To help you achieve your business goals in 2015, it starts with your business signage.  Here are our tips to improve your business’ signage from the top Seattle sign company.

  1. Make the lettering readable.  If passers by can’t read your sign, you might as well thrown in the towel.  Fancy scripted fonts are elegant, but are more difficult to read on a sign.  Choose fonts that are clear and readable, and make sure the lettering is large enough for people to read your sign without having to squint.

  2. Make sure your sign is well lit.  Even if a neon sign isn’t your thing, you still want your sign to be clearly visible in low light.  If you plan on doing any business during evening hours or say, in the winter in Seattle, make sure your business sign is well lit so passers by can see it.

  3. Find the optimum location.  If your sign is too high, or obscured by trees or phone lines overhead, alter the height of your sign, or choose to mount it in a different location.

  4. Use color.  Many people don’t put a lot of thought into their choice of colors on a business sign, but it matters.  If your business already has established colors for branding purposes, it’s best to stay consistent with what you already have.  Using contrasting colors - for example a light colored font on a dark colored background, helps your sign by more visible.  And choosing complementary colors (2-3 colors that work well together) helps bring the design together into a pleasing effect.

  5. Create a memorable image.  Some people respond to words, others to pictures or graphics.  Most business signage has a combination of the two.  A sign that has an attractive or eye catching graphic is memorable and works to help attract attention.  But don’t let the graphic be so overpowering that your message is lost.

  6. Keep the message simple.  Too much text or too much information crammed on a sign turns people off.  An uncomplicated, simple message is easier to read and people are more likely to respond.  Have a clear call to action (the thing you want your customers to do, whether it is to book an appointment, try your dinner special, etc).

Your business’ sign is often the first visible, physical object that customers will see, so it makes sense to put a lot of care and thought into what your sign should look like.  And once you’ve designed your sign, be sure to make it visible to the public and potential customers.  Creating an attractive and effective business sign is well worth the investment.

Happy New Year everyone!
