5 Advantages of Acrylic Signs

April 02, 2020

Acrylic signs are an excellent way of enhancing the look and feel of your building or office. They provide a sophisticated look and feel to any wall they grace. Due to their visually transparent nature, they’re a great alternative to using fragile and more expensive glass.

If you’re looking for a versatile signage option that will make a fantastic first impression, we want to share with you the benefits and value of using acrylic for the signage throughout your office.

Acrylic 101

Acrylic is a polymer material that looks and feels just like glass—but without the heavy weight. If it’s accidentally dropped or hit by something, it won’t shatter into a million little pieces as a typical glass sign would.

Acrylic is made out of a cast polymer and is colorless, durable, and transparent. It can be used as a stand-alone option or included on other signage to create a highly customized look. It’s most often used as a substitute to frosted glass due to the full range of customization and finishing options.

Add Some Pizzazz!

The versatility of acrylic and endless customization options makes it an ideal choice for anyone that wants a completely unique but professional look and feel:

Three Dimensional – By adding a solid background color behind the acrylic sign, you can create a stunning 3D effect.

Outside Borders – A thin, outside border can be added to the edges of the sign to help keep the eyes focused on the text inside. This option works great for wayfinding signage located in the lobbies of big buildings.

Non-Glare Finishing – If your office has bright fluorescent lights that give off a glare, you can add a non-glare finishing to the acrylic sign, which will absorb the light instead of reflecting it. This makes it much easier to read.

Custom Colors – By using custom colors on both the front and back of the sign, you can create an interesting visual effect that will be sure to capture the attention of people walking by.

If you’re unsure as to what type of acrylic sign you’d like to have, or need design assistance, the in-house design experts at McNamara Signs can help.

Customizing Acrylic

UV ink is used to print letters, images, and numbers on an acrylic block. Once the design is finalized, the piece is then cut to a custom size. This allows it to work exceptionally well with large format printers due to the available sizes from the factory.

If your sign is to reside in a high-traffic area, you can add a layer of protection by printing your logo or design on the back of a transparent piece of acrylic. This way, if something were to scratch or bump into it, the design won’t be damaged.

Frosted glass is trendy in modern offices, but it is expensive, heavy, and very fragile. You can achieve the same look and effect by opting for a frosted piece of acrylic. LED lights can be added to the background to create a visually stunning piece.

Installation is a Cinch!

Due to its relative light weight when compared to glass, you can install an acrylic sign almost anywhere. If you want to add it to the outside of a building, UV-resistant inks will help protect it from the harsh rays of the sun.

A cable display system will allow you to mount it on the wall or suspend it in the air. The thin but strong wires that attach to the sides are almost invisible to the naked eye—thereby making the sign look as if it were floating in midair!

Chrome, brushed metal, and nickel-plated standoffs or offsets are most often used to secure an acrylic sign to a wall. This offers a slight 3D effect as a small drop shadow is cast upon the wall as the interior light shines through it.

You can also use heavy-duty Velcro to adhere to the acrylic sign to the wall if your office lease doesn’t allow drilling holes. Unlike glass, which is very heavy, acrylic is light as a feather and will easily stick to a wall for many years.
